Aromatherapy: Your Travel Companion for Stress Relief

Whether you're escaping the winter chill for a sunny getaway or embarking on a family road trip, travelling can sometimes feel overwhelming. Let’s dive into how aromatherapy can help you stay calm and collected during your journeys.

Why Aromatherapy Matters When Traveling

Travelling is an amazing experience, but it often comes with its own set of stresses. From packing your bags to navigating airport security, the hustle and bustle can make anyone anxious. Especially if you're travelling with kids or during busy holiday seasons, it’s easy to feel the weight of the world on your shoulders.

Many people experience travel-related anxiety, whether it’s a simple drive across town or a long flight. Symptoms can include everything from nervousness and agitation to upset stomachs. This is where aromatherapy can step in and provide some much-needed relief!

Personal Inhalers: Your On-the-Go Solution

One of our favourite tools for managing stress while travelling is a personal inhaler filled with essential oils. These handy little devices are perfect as they fit in your pocket, they are formulated just for you, and no one else needs to smell or worry about the essential oils you’re using.

We also refer to them as sniffy sticks and they are ideal for a variety of travel situations:

  • Staycations: Even if you’re just exploring your city, having your inhaler on hand can help ground you.

  • Long Drives: If you’re heading to visit family or friends, inhaling calming scents can make the ride much more pleasant.

  • Flights: Air travel brings its own unique challenges, like dealing with crowded terminals and recycled air. A quick sniff from your inhaler can help keep you calm during the flight.

Dealing with Travel Anxiety

Travelling often requires a lot of planning. You might find yourself worrying about forgetting essential items, dealing with delays, or managing the logistics of getting to the airport on time. The added pressure of parking and going through customs can heighten your stress levels.

When you’re stuck in a cramped airplane cabin or a car, you’re also breathing in the same air repeatedly, which can feel suffocating. Using aromatherapy can combat that feeling. Essential oils can uplift your mood, reduce anxiety, and even ease physical symptoms like nausea.

Here are some essential oils you might consider adding to your personal inhaler for travel:

  • Lavender: Known for its calming properties, it can help ease anxiety and promote relaxation.

  • Peppermint: Great for reducing nausea and can also help with mental clarity.

  • Frankincense: This oil is grounding and can help you feel centred amidst the chaos.

  • Sweet Orange: A cheerful scent that can uplift your mood and reduce stress levels.

The most important thing to keep in mind is to select the oils that have the aromas you like. You want the scent to be enjoyable. If you prefer woodsy oils, add in some vetiver and cedarwood, if you prefer the scent of herbs, try basil and rosemary, or if you’re more of a citrus person, can’t go wrong with bergamot, lime, and grapefruit. Make sure you incorporate the scents you're drawn to, and as you take three deep breaths, picture yourself calm, cool and collected!

Here are a few tips to maximize the benefits of aromatherapy during your travels:

  • Choose the Right Time: Use your inhaler before you feel overwhelmed. This proactive approach can help you maintain a sense of calm.

  • Practice Deep Breathing: Pair your inhaler with deep breathing exercises to enhance relaxation.

  • Stay Consistent: Make it a habit to use your inhaler whenever you travel, so it becomes a comforting ritual.

Travelling can be a wonderful adventure, but it doesn’t have to come with a side of stress. By incorporating aromatherapy into your travel routine, you can create a more enjoyable and calming experience. So, whether you’re hitting the road or flying high, don’t forget to pack your personal inhaler filled with your favourite essential oils. Safe travels, everyone!
